Summer Training

In summer, Monday and Tuesday classes are held outdoors at Piñon Valley Park. Classes follow the same schedule and curriculum as usual, just with a little more fresh air and sunshine. Here's what to know before you show up.

Piñon Valley Park, 5585 Mule Deer Dr, Colorado Springs CO 80919

Weather & cancellations

Colorado weather has a mind of its own, especially in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms, sudden temperature swings, and high UV days can all affect whether it's safe to train outside. When conditions aren't cooperating, we may shorten, modify, or cancel class on short notice. Student and instructor safety always comes first.

Please make sure to read through our weather safety policy. If a weather-related class change occurs, MSMA will notify students & their families via email and social media. Follow our Instagram and Facebook pages to make sure you don't miss any important announcements.

A note for parents

Because Colorado weather can change quickly, we ask that parents and guardians remain nearby during outdoor classes. You don't need to stay on the training field, but please don't venture far. If conditions turn, we may need to end class early and get students back to their families quickly, and having parents close makes that much smoother for everyone.

Please also take a moment before summer outdoor training begins to confirm that MSMA has your current emergency contact information on file. If anything has changed, reach out to us at [email protected] or let an instructor know before class.

What to bring

Outdoor classes have a few extra gear considerations compared to training at Trailblazer. Please come prepared:

  • Water. Bring at least one large, full water bottle. We take regular water breaks, and it's important to bring more than you think you'll need during the summer.
  • Sunscreen. Apply SPF 30 or higher before arriving and reapply during breaks. Colorado's altitude means UV exposure is stronger than it feels.
  • Insect repellent. Recommended for keeping away mosquitos and other insects in the evening.
  • Footwear. Closed-toe shoes are strongly encouraged. Grass hides uneven ground, and concrete and gravel can be rough on bare feet.

What to wear

Your gi is always welcome and encouraged. If you prefer, clean athletic wear is perfectly fine for park classes (please stick to solid colors when possible). Whatever you choose, make sure you have appropriate coverage for physical activity in a public space.
